"After a first year dedicated to detailed engineering studies, we are now delighted to be able to start the construction phase in early 2022. The first deliverables, an integral part of the engineering phase, will contribute to the construction phase of the facilities. On the industrial side, we have also completed the mock-up of the future plant and we are looking forward to starting the full-scale cycling tests. These tests will allow to simulate the injection and withdrawal of hydrogen in order to manage the intermittency of energy in the future. The first quarter of 2022 will see the construction of the electrolysis unit, but also the platform and the conversion work on the salt cavern, which until now has been used to store natural gas. We look forward to reporting the first results that will contribute to the deployment of the future hydrogen network. In the meantime, we wish you an Happy New Year!"

What are the key skills and expertise on hydrogen of Element Energy?

Based on our in-depth understanding of the hydrogen sector and our extensive networks of contacts, we can lead the development of techno-economic analysis, including assessment of policies needed to achieve environmental and economic objectives.

We have also significant experience in initiating project (leading applications for public subsidy) and managing large consortia often comprising industry and public sector representatives.

Element Energy brings extensive experience of hydrogen demand profiles, and similarly electrolyser operation profiles (REFHYNE and H2ME projects) and project management (JIVE, H2ME, ZEFER, H2HAUL projects) to the HYPSTER project. We previously carried out techno-economic and business case analysis on salt cavern storage facilities in the UK through the Centurion and HySecure projects.
 

Except works on underground hydrogen storage, have you already worked on other risks linked to hydrogen?

Ineris has a 25 years’ experience on hydrogen safety. Our activity addresses all aspects of hydrogen risk management, from the safe design of hydrogen systems to the risk analysis, modelling of accidental scenarios…elaboration of safety cases, certification, ATEX zoning, detection of hydrogen leaks, evaluation of safety barriers, analysis of accident databases, etc. Thanks to a multidisciplinary team and unique experimental platforms for studying hydrogen dispersion, fire and burst phenomena, Ineris has become over the years a reference expert in hydrogen risks and offers its services to industrials, administrations and academic partners involved in the hydrogen value chain, from production to storage, transport, distribution and usages.
