In 2019, the European Commission announced the European Green Deal as the strategy to achieve EU climate neutrality by 2050. Green hydrogen plays an important role to achieve such objectives by complementing the efforts of electrification to reach carbon neutrality in the decarbonization of the hard-to-abate sectors.

GREENH2ATLANTIC, awarded a grant by the European Commission under the H2020 framework programme, is an innovative project that aims to develop a first-of-a-kind 100 MW electrolysis plant in Sines, Portugal, supplying green hydrogen to a local refinery and blending in the natural gas grid. GREENH2ATLANTIC will have a relevant contribution to reach the GW scale electrolysis needed to achieve the decarbonization targets, by demonstrating the competitiveness of green hydrogen production while repurposing existing infrastructures of a decommissioned coal fired power plant, also contributing to the just transition of a region.

The cumulative experience of the 13 companies, research institutes and academia involved will allow to successfully deliver an important contribution towards a carbon-neutral economy at the European level.

It is our belief that green hydrogen is a fundamental piece to lead to a better world. Words are not enough; actions are the best way to show commitment. And that’s what we are doing!

Ana Quelhas – Managing Director – H2BU, EDP

INTRODUCTION OF THE PROJECT

Officially launched in December 2021, GreenH2Atlantic has been selected as part of Horizon 2020 – Green Deal Call to demonstrate the viability of green hydrogen production on an unprecedented scale. The 30 million euros grant will help to finance the construction of the hydrogen plant, located in the coal-fired power plant area in Sines, Portugal. The construction should start in 2023 and operation is expected to begin in 2025, subject to securing the necessary authorizations by the authorities.
