Controlling risks

Europe has made the development of the "green" hydrogen industry a priority of its strategy to face climate change. The Hypster project is a great opportunity to build an experimental pilot for the underground storage of green hydrogen. This should pave the way for the creation of a green hydrogen sector at industrial scale and its technical and economic replicability on other locations in Europe.

As a reference institute for industrial environment and associated risks, Ineris considers that hydrogen is a promising alternative energy vector to fossil fuels that can be produced from renewable or low-carbon energy. Ineris is proud to be involved in this first European-funded green-hydrogen underground storage demonstrator.

Safety and environmental issues remain major factors in public acceptance. Ineris with the other involved partners have the responsibility to demonstrate the safety and low environmental impact of this technology. For this reason, a rigorous safety analysis is being performed to identify, to assess and to control, all types of risks that the pilot may pose to people and the environment.

LET'S DISCOVER THE DIFFERENT PROJECT'S PARTNERS !

2 NEW PARTNERS HAVE JOINED THE CONSORTIUM!
We are very pleased to welcome the expertise of Brouard and Equinor on the HyPSTER project's adventure!

Brouard Consulting is contributing its expertise to the HyPSTER project, in particular by carrying out numerical calculations using its LOCAS software to accurately model the thermodynamic behavior of the salt caverns filled with hydrogen and to control the mechanical stability of the surrounding rock mass.(learn more)

To build knowledge and reduce risks related to hydrogen storage, Equinor’s Technology, Digitalisation and Innovation organization has become a late participant in the HyPSTER project. Equinor will contribute with a new work package on bio-risks related to hydrogen storage in salt caverns and assessment of hydrogen purification technologies. (learn more)

NEW! HyPSTER podcast

Discover the first Podcast on HyPSTER project on “Talking New Energy” Delta-EE. In this episode, Jon discusses with Germain Hurtado, Hydrogen Project Director at Storengy and Rob Bloom, hydrogen expert at Delta-EE, how green hydrogen can be stored at scale in salt caverns. Focusing on the Hypster project in France, Jon and the guests explore how this can provide a buffer between production and demand, as well as opening up opportunities for hydrogen to be an answer to the growing need for long-duration storage.
