Controlling risks
Europe has made the development of the "green" hydrogen industry a priority of its strategy to face climate change. The Hypster project is a great opportunity to build an experimental pilot for the underground storage of green hydrogen. This should pave the way for the creation of a green hydrogen sector at industrial scale and its technical and economic replicability on other locations in Europe.
As a reference institute for industrial environment and associated risks, Ineris considers that hydrogen is a promising alternative energy vector to fossil fuels that can be produced from renewable or low-carbon energy. Ineris is proud to be involved in this first European-funded green-hydrogen underground storage demonstrator.
Safety and environmental issues remain major factors in public acceptance. Ineris with the other involved partners have the responsibility to demonstrate the safety and low environmental impact of this technology. For this reason, a rigorous safety analysis is being performed to identify, to assess and to control, all types of risks that the pilot may pose to people and the environment.
