ENGIE is a leader in the energy transition. As such we are committed to develop green hydrogen projects. ENGIE has an ambitious target of reaching at least 4 GW of electrolyzers producing green hydrogen by 2030, focusing on the regions we are already present.

Portugal, where we are the second largest electricity producer, is one of our key countries to develop this new industry. We are proud to continue contributing significantly to the country's sustainability goals, in particular through the Green H2 Atlantic project in which ENGIE is one of the main shareholders.

Our team is working diligently with its partners to make this project a success. ENGIE is among others developing AHYMS, a highly innovative AI-enhanced Hydrogen Management System, funded by the Green Deal call. This will further enable EDP's coal-fired power plant to be transformed into a hydrogen hub.

AHYMS will simulate and accurately model the future behavior of the electrolyzer installation and, once in use, optimize technically and economically its operation in real-time.

With this state-of-the-art system, which presents some of the most difficult technical and design challenges, we will pave the way for accelerating the hydrogen market and helping the country, our customers, and our partners to achieve carbon neutrality.

INTRODUCTION OF THE PROJECT

Officially launched in December 2021, GreenH2Atlantic has been selected as part of Horizon 2020 – Green Deal Call to demonstrate the viability of green hydrogen production on an unprecedented scale. The 30 million euros grant will help to finance the construction of the hydrogen plant, located in the coal-fired power plant area in Sines, Portugal. The construction should start in 2023 and operation is expected to begin in 2025, subject to securing the necessary authorizations by the authorities.

LET'S DISCOVER THE DIFFERENT PROJECT'S PARTNERS !

The project is managed by a consortium of 13 partners working on different topics. You will discover in the second newsletter the profile of VESTAS and EFACEC.

What is the role of VESTAS in the project?

With 157 GW of wind turbines installed in 88 countries and more than 40 years in the wind industry, Vestas has installed more wind capacity that any other company in the world. Vestas’ vision to become the global leader in sustainable energy solution was endorsed this year being named the most sustainable company in the world 2022 by Corporate Knights’ global ranking. As such, Vestas is placing its unmatched expertise in this field at the service of GreenH2Atlantic to optimize the use of renewable energy sources in the production of green hydrogen.

What is the role of EFACEC in the project?

In this project, Efacec will actively participate in the collection of data and the development of a comprehensive study on power conversion solutions for the electrolyser. In addition, Efacec will contribute to the engineering of the electrolyser modules, through the design of different conversion architectures to be included within the scope of the project.
